INFORMATION ON BEETLES:
There is no doubt that this is the most common cause of damage to timber by insects in buildings in the UK the generally accepted common name is somewhat inappropriate as it is often found in furniture.
The common house borer is a better name and is the description adopted in New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. The natural habitat for this insect is in hedgerow and woodland timber, in dead ariel branches which may be too dry for any fungal decay to be present. from this natural habitat it has spread into buildings to attack structural joinery and furniture timber.
It has been shown that in rural areas 80% of houses which are over 40 years old have some timber infested by this insect.
